Required Contact Hours

During enrollment at Bhavana Institute you must attend classes with a Bhavana Institute staff member, a 500-hour RYT teacher or an approved Bhavana Institute Yoga teacher. The average time in class should be about 1.5 hours per week in order to fit in required contact hours.

Developing an ongoing practice, and a relationship with your teacher will give you a chance to integrate information from course classes.

It is important that you maintain ongoing contact with a teacher while going through the program.

If you are pursuing the Iyengar Teacher in Training, you must study with a Junior Intermediate Level 1 teacher in order to gain recommendation. You must also take your apprenticeship hours with a Junior Intermediate Level 1 teacher. Please see IYNAUS.org for complete understanding of this process.

Apprenticeship

Apprenticeship is perhaps the best place to deepen, refine and be fully immersed in learning to teach. Through working with experienced teachers, the student learns through observation, and assistance in Yoga classes.

Students in the 300-hour program must complete 40 hours of apprenticeship.

Apprenticeship will be set up individually and you have an additional 1 year after the course classes end to complete and submit requirements for apprenticeship. Availability for times in the apprenticeship slots will vary.

Student Teaching

Whether at the Bhavana Institute or the student’s chosen location, this is a chance to get hands-on teaching experience with feedback from the faculty. After completing apprenticeship students in the 300-hour program must set up their own classes and teach for a minimum 30 hours. After completing at least 15 hours of student teaching, the student must have one class observed by an Bhavana Institute faculty member, or Bhavana Institute-approved observer.

Electives

To fulfill the requirements for graduation in the 300-hour program, students need to complete a minimum of 40 hours of Elective Workshops for credit. Bhavana Institute offers a wide variety of workshops throughout the year, many of which qualify for the elective credit in the program. The Faculty must approve workshops outside of the Bhavana Institute that you wish to use to fulfill elective hours.
